Informatics/Computer Olympian [Who are they ?]

Berikut adalah artikel yang ditulis oleh Brian Marshal [Bronze Medalist, International Olympiad in Informatics 2007 Croatia, Zagreb] yang dikutip dari blog nya : blog.microbrainx.net

What Olympian Means to Indonesia
Looking back at some recent cases, I still wonder why Indonesia’s government still do not care about its science achievers. A lot of science medalists face a complicated and bureaucratic system to enter the national university. As a matter of fact, this mid-year, about 10-15 students from Indonesian Computing Olympiad Team (TOKI) took Bandung Institute […]

-Ironisme Pasca OSN-

IT Curriculum

My first post….

Could you imagine, what if your teacher asked you to make a blog and consider it as an assignment ? It was pathetic, wasn’t it ?
Guess what ? It happened to me…and my goal of making this blog was [unfortunately] blackened with that damn assignment.

I’m really concerned with the curriculum for ICT subjects here in my school. It is not arranged to give students an understanding about IT. It just [in my honest opinion], teach the students HOW to OPERATE computer, NOT the real essence of IT. No wonder if the students never have an IT-based-minded.

I think the very reason is because they use the computer as an OBJECT of that study itself, not as a SUBJECT to support the teaching process.

Let’s see, in Junior high school we learned about Microsoft Office AND we also learn it AGAIN in Senior High School…it was so time-wasting,isn’t it ? WHY ? Because I am sure that we will definitely forget what we have learned if we have never used it. Maybe you are disagree with my opinion, it is quite reasonable, because maybe you think, capable to operate Ms. Office is an important thing, and a must-have-skill for nowadays.
If you think so, could you imagine if we do NOT learn it at school BUT everytime we need to do a school assignment, we use that Ms. Office, e.g. using Ms.Word to do homework, Ms. Power Point for making a presentation, etc. I am SURE that we will be absolutely familiar and skilled to operate Ms. Office WITHOUT having to learn the theory, and even the most pathetic thing, having to face a THEORY test for it.

The other example [heard it from my friend]. His teacher got him to do an assignment. The assignment was that he had to print a picture which contained informations about all functions of the IE [Internet Explorer] tool bar. He had to draw a line for each tool and make a the corresponding function for it.
What a wasting-time and useless activity !! I mean, did it help us to understand how to use IE ? Did it help us for making us more familiar with IE ? Was it WORTH to DO ?? NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT !! If they wanted to make us familiar with IE, why didn’t they ask their students to search for their homework’s information from the internet ? By doing that, I am sure, without having to ask the students to write all of the functions of IE tool bar, they will absolutely know it by themselves. In this case, the computer is used as a SUBJECT, and not as an OBJECT.

If the school’s keep on using computer as an OBJECT, not as a SUBJECT, the ICT lesson in Senior High School will be absolutely useless.
